Exposure to these metals may occur when you eat vegetables grown in contaminated soil, or when you ingest or breathe in soil particles. The effect these substances have on your health depends on how much of the substance you are exposed to, and the time period over which you are exposed. Once the heavy metals are in the soil, they tend to stay there, but there are ways to reduce your exposure.

Some metals, like zinc, nickel, and copper, are essential in small amounts for a healthy diet. However, either too much or too little of these substances can have harmful effects. Some metals are more harmful (like lead and arsenic), and can have more serious health effects.
