Lead-contaminated soil, found almost everywhere, can have severe health risks. Its accessability in soil makes it a major source of childhood lead poisoning in the United States1. Lead containing compounds were used as additives in paint and gasoline, resulting in widespread contamination of soil, particularly in developed urban areas. Soil is also more likely to be contaminated around older homes (50+ years) as lead paint would have chipped off a home and landed in the soil directly next to the house. Lead is persistant, meaning that it does not degrade and it remains in the environment. Testing soil for lead in urban areas where folks are gardening and/or children and pets are playing is critical.
