Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, are are group of chemicals that are released during the incomplete burning of fossil fuel, like coal and gasoline. PAHs can become attached to soil particles, and produce grown in the soil may also be contaminated with PAHs. PAH’s in soils can be carried into surface/ground water through precipitation and surface runoff, emitted into atmosphere by volatilization, and transported into crops from polluted soil and air via root and leaf adsorption. The EPA considers some PAHs to be carcinogenic, cancer causing, in humans. Thus, testing your soil especially in urban settings is critical.
